Mongar Town now

This is for those who have not been to Mongar for a long time....it has become a big town with big, tall buildings and plenty of shops. Those who visit after a long time are certainly meeting with surprise.
This picture was taken from the proximity of Wangchuk Hotel.

Mongar Tsechu ends

The otherwise empty mongar public ground was converted into a mini town for about 5 days during the annual Tsechu. It housed several shops, bars, hotels, movie halls and fun centres like Tambola. Though dusty , it was a crowded place and was frequented by everyone-young and old, elite and rural, rich and poor.
Ofcourse and not srurprisingly, there were not many hospital visits and not even a single emergency call for me!

H1N1 training for doctors

The one day training was conducted at Hotel Wangchuk on 28th November. It was basically focussed on clinical management and outbreak response. All the doctors from the eastern hospitals were there. Today, it is being done for the nursing staff and the ACOs.
The training was short and very useful for case management in case there are any.

What patients can expect at Mongar Hospital

You can generally expect a much faster consultation with the specialists, doctors or health workers as the number of patients is much lower than that in JDW. Investigation reports are made available the same day except some special investigations. You donot have to worry about bed shortage except in few wards.
Most investigations that are available at JDW can be availed here except CT/MRI and some selected radiological procedures. Ultrasound, endoscopy, basic echocardiography and colposcopy are routinely done.
Available specialists include Medical,Surgical, Orthopedic, Eye, ENT, Pediatric, Gyenecologist and Pathologist. The services of a qualified Radiologist is a felt need for this new hospital.

Reports of malnutrition in Chali, Mongar

Chali under Mongar Dongkhag , made headlines on the BBS news for having many malnourished children and that the number has doubled over the last one year. I have taken a serious note of this and will soon make a visit to the BHU and see the affected children. I am also planning to examine all the school children if possible.

Mongar gearing up for the Tshechu

Mongar is suddenly bubbling with activities just ahead of the Tshechu. There is lot of activity in the public ground: preparations for shops, stalls, hotels, movie halls etc etc. There are more people around the town and certainly more vehicles. We are all excited about some fun. Will post you some pictures soon.

Hon'ble Lyonpo, the Minister of Health visited Mongar Hospital on the evening of 10th November and met with the staff and individual patients in all the units. Lyonpo also hosted a dinner for the doctors and staff. On the morning of 11th November, co-inciding with the birth anniversary of the fourth Druk Gyalpo, Lyonpo inagurated the Herbal Steam Treatment Centre in the Indegenous unit.

My thoughts on what a Hospital should be like

It is my personnel feeling that many hospitals which have been constructed of late in our country have been expensive, posh structures which are many a times less user friendly.Hospitals should be simple structures with separate out patient and inpatient blocks. This will help immensely in crowd control and hospital sanitation , besides making it easier for the patients. Things like washable wall paints, taps, properly and conveniently located OTs, make a lot of difference.

Upcoming events in Mongar Hospital

There will be a five days Trauma management workshop and a three day STI/HIV/AIDS Management workshop at Mongar in the next week. Health workers from entire eastern region will participate in the workshops.

IMNCI in Mongar Hospital

The first batch 24 BHU staff under Mongar Dzongkhag are currently attending a 8 days training on Integrated Management of Neonatal and Childhood illness (IMNCI). This very important and intensive training is conducted through budgetary support from UNICEF and WHO. IMNCI is an integrated approach to child health that focuses on the well-being of the whole child, rather than a single illness. This training is aimed at improving the overall case management skills of the health care workers especially at rural settings with limited facilities and early referral of cases that need advanced care.

The long term objectives of the training Program include improved case management of under five children, reduction of under-five mortality, better nutrition and immunization coverage and achievement of the Millennium Development Goal of Reducing Childhood Mortality.

A similar training will be conducted for the remaining health staff soon, ensuring that all the health staff working in the BHUs under Mongar Dzongkhags are trained in this strategy.
